The Birdsong Backpackers Family

Originally from the UK, we decided to travel around the world together which proved so much fun that it took two years… So we’ve had a fair share of backpacking experiences!

About us

Nine months were spent here in New Zealand, mainly in the South Island, and so call it destiny – we were keen to return and settle for the friendly atmosphere, stunning scenery and scope of activities here on The West Coast. The Coast has a very appealing chill-out factor. Since April 2002 we have been resident in New Zealand and have never looked back.

In July 2003 we bought the building as a large, family house and saw it’s potential the moment we set foot inside. Most of the conversion to the hostel we did ourselves and see it very much as an on-going project!

Sid the dog… Sadly passed away in 2013 Perhaps the most laid-back member of our family and world famous in New Zealand! We’ve had people travel far and wide just to meet Sid the Australian Kelpie, and he adored people.

Neil’s background is as a Maintenance Fitter and Dairy Engineer in the UK. He’s the clever person who did much of the handy-work to convert the family house into the hostel as it is today. As a guest at Birdsong you may even be lucky enough to sample some of his baking.

Kerry was Teacher of Art and Design back in the UK and has utilised her painting skills and passion for birds to create the unique interior décor throughout the rooms of the hostel. These funky, cheerful paintings help to set the warm and friendly ambiance. Artworks and small souvenirs are available through the gift-shop. You may be inspired to try your hand at something creative during your stay in Hokitika.

Our two children Laura and Robbie are very sociable and love meeting people when they are not at school or playing with friends.
